Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) needs to be methylated (converted) in order to become its active form: 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. The liver and intestines are responsible for this process to take place naturally. The resulting 5-MTHF can be found in blood and the tissues in which it is utilized. Interestingly, a high percentage of people - up to 60% in some countries - have a genetic enzyme defect preventing them from converting Folic Acid to 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate.
